Europe (Part 1) ==> Barcelona

TJ's iCrack helped us survive 12+ hours of air travel.
The Toronto airport's international terminal has a sweet echo chamber.
TJ was compelled to climb into every one of these Toronto airport newspaper stations.
We sure were happy to be in Barcelona!

Tree telling tales of Barca as we walk past what will be a bustling active business area at some other point in the day.  Don't ask us what the business are nor when they open.  You just need to come back later and see what pops up.

TJ and JT waiting for the choo-choo (subway).
Chapel in old town section of Barcelona.

A semi-creepy old guy had a collection of dolls and a handful of bunnies.  We heard about these bunnies from TJ for the next several days.  In case you're wondering, he did pet the bunnies.  He'll tell you again if you need confirmation.

Flynns & BK at the best park in Barcelona.
What park could be complete without a mammoth statue?
TJ shares his camera smile.
The key to a good time in Barca is to walk around the various neighborhood squares until you find an all-day all-night folk dancing festival.  Success!!!
The only place to be on Sunday is the beach.
Our epic walk around town on Monday included several stops at the plentiful playgrounds.
Most people would share a few dozen pictures of Gaudí's La Sagrada Família, but since this blog is all about TJ, you get this.  (Use the Google machine if pictures of buildings are your kind of thing.)

Balloon festivities in the pedestrian area adjacent to La Rambla.
Jamon sammich time.
This former bullfighting arena recently re-opened as a high-end mall...
...with a kick-arse view of Placa d'Espanya (plaza), Torres Venecianes (towers) and Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (palace in the far background).  The 360 degree views available from the top of the arena were only slightly less popular with TJ than the all-glass elevator at the center of the mall (not pictured).

Park Guell is a short, steep hike straight up from BK & Tree's place.  We went here for sunsets and amazing views our last two nights in Barca.  We could spend heaps more time in this park... if only we had more time.
TJ goofing around at sunset amid beautiful views.
Hells-yeah!
Bye-bye Barca... France, here we come!

Labor Day on the McKenzie River

TJ jumps into the rafting preparations, inflating himself for safety.

JT teaches TJ the pleasures of eating scramble scrapings from the skillet.

TJ learns quickly.

TJ's early driving lessons include mandatory "fiddling with knobs" practice.

Labor Day rafting on the McKenzie (or another) River is currently slotted as an ongoing Flynn family tradition.  We're excited to see how the experience progresses from year to year and can't wait until TJ is ready and able to join us in the raft.  (JT and Ra each spent one day on the water and the other with TJ, as this section of river is a bit too advanced for TJ to ride in the paddle raft.)

August Highlights

TJ and Olive love the sprinkler.  Oz is, as usual, uncertain.
Family photo in the back yard hammock.

TJ enjoyed his first kayaking session during a few minutes of flat water on the lower Clackamas River.
Later in the day, we popped off my skirt, allowing him to stand on the bottom of the boat while "we" paddled.  His grin was even wider that second time around.

TJ loves tomato.
TJ enjoys a tomato while JT grills dinner.

"I can totally fix that."

TJ begins his carpentry apprenticeship by observing the construction of some simple shelving in the basement.

Words and Signs

As TJ progresses through his second year, we are approaching some big milestones.  I enjoyed the transition from describing his age in weeks to months, and once he's two, I resolve to use years (and fractions no smaller than quarters).  Another big milestone is his communication.  Although his pronounciation is poor at best, his vocabulary is growing very quickly, so Raminta and I decided to document his early words (signs and spoken) for posterity.

It may also be worth noting that all words are either a sign or a spoken word.  He doesn't seem to see the point in learning to say words for which he has a sign.  The only exception is his eat sign or anything else that is urgent (e.g. help) is often joined by noise-making, mostly to get attention or convey urgency.

Here's the rundown as well as some fun editorial tidbits that convey some of his personality and creativity.
For both signs and words, "*" denotes signs that TJ created/invented himself.

Signs:
  • milk/nurse
  • chicken/bird
  • eat
  • cheese
  • berries
  • more
  • all done
  • help
  • *water - touches or pinches tongue
  • *shoulder ride - pats himself on the head to ask for a ride, definitely my favorite of his inventions
  • *ice - gnashes teeth together, which took us about a week to decipher
  • bunny - pointer finger extended and hopping (poor one-eared finger-bunny)
  • thank you
  • please
  • wave - as in bye-bye
  • fist bump - he also enjoys high-fives and handshakes
  • blow kisses
  • *listen - anytime he hears an interesting sound, he holds a finger up, as if to say "wait, i hear something!"

Words:
  • dada
  • mama - sounds like "bubba"
  • up
  • down
  • dog
  • cat - just the "t" sound
  • eye
  • out
  • ow - he loves pointing at his knee scrapes and letting us know they are "ow"
  • no
  • yeah
  • *oh - which is his universal affirmative, the longer or more pronounced, the more significant the topic
  • cow - which is his attempt to "moo" that sounds like "booooo"
  • *pig - sounds like a hard "k", the sound a Minecraft pig makes when it dies
  • that
  • Sidney - "sis-si", our neighbor who is his age and is his BFF
  • car
  • hi
  • yuck - which is almost exclusively used in place of the noun "dog poo"
  • ball - a ball or any sport, whether is uses a ball or not (he loves watching football and soccer)
  • *yogurt - actually the unique "letl-letl-letl" sound of tongue darting in and out of lips, his own invention
  • basketball - "ba-ball"
  • uh-oh - used anytime anything falls down, purposefully or not
  • moon - sounds identical to balloon
  • balloon - sounds identical to moon
  • go - often preceded by "gibberish, gibberish, go" as in "ready, set, go"
  • cheers - he loves clanking glasses for "cheers"
  • boat? - we think he knows this one, mostly from watching his dad kayaking
  • choo-choo

Bellingham in August

Ra and TJ made a trip to Bellingham during the first weekend in August.

TJ learns most of his life skills from Olive and Oz.
I'm not sure why standing in the dog dish is so popular, but maybe I'm missing out on the "next big thing".

It's a rare moment that TJ has a tool and isn't using it on the pups.

TJ dresses for his next great expedition.

TJ mounts his trusty steed.

Pool time!
Grandma and TJ enjoy a snack.
TJ and grandpa take a break.
Double cuteness.
